To tell you the truth, my visions of 'I Need to Know' and the AM radio are not very positive. "I didn't really think about that, but when I heard it, I knew it might be a hit single. It was so damn catchy that it cried out to be spun six times a day at any self-respecting AM rocker. I accused Petty of almost deviously devising “I Need to Know,” the first single off their second album “You’re Gonna Get It!,” for AM radio mega-success. And though Petty often sang of hurt and rejection, the buoyant, melodic texture and flow led the listener away from bitterness into a belief that, "Hey, everything's gonna be all right."
